Rhetorical Triangle on Obama's Speech on Combating ISIS and Terrorism
Speaker: President Obama is informing the nation that he has ordered the military to conduct airstrikes on ISIL territory which has "protected American personnel and facilities, killed ISIL fighters, destroyed weapons, and given space for Iraqi and Kurdish forces to "reclaim key territory." He has taken action to protect American citizens, for the group has already claimed the lives of two Americans, and they think there are people from Europe and even Americans who have joined the group and may return to carry out attacks. The airstrike attack against ISIL prevents American casualties on foreign soil and prevents ISIL members from carrying out attacks and potentially targeting the United States.
Audience: The speech is directed towards the citizens of the United states. President Obama continuously says "we", making the audience feel that they are apart of something big or to show that he is the entirity of the governement is working to end this. He must know ISIL members, or any other person affiliated in terrorist groups, are watching, because he states that "if you threaten America, you will find no safe haven." President Obama includes this to make it known that America will find justice where justice is due, and that each threat will be investigated. Congress is also included in the audience, as he calls upon them to "give us additional authorities and resources to train and equip these fighters."
Topic: President Obama is delivering the speech to inform the American public of the terrorist group ISIL that has been killing innocent american people. He also tells the public about the planned mission and how he plans to go do this mission.
